The Great Barracuda is found almost anywhere in South Florida.
Juveniles up to 5 lbs. can be found in the shallow water near shore in the Keys. Larger specimens
are found near the reefs and most coral heads away from shore. The Barracuda found offshore can
often be found in the 25 lb or larger category. Cuda up to 50 lbs are not uncommon and reach
lengths of 5 feet or more. The barracuda is not considered a good fish to eat since many larger
specimens contain a poison called Ciguatera. This does not, however, prevent anglers from having
a great time catching this misunderstood fish. The Great Barracuda has a fierce beauty to it's
silver and grey sides with numerous black spots. The fierce teeth make this a fish that should
only be handled by the first mate but please feel free to pose for excellent pictures with the
mate and your catch. Kids love catching these fish and the stories they tell their friends are
worth gold. Many kids have become hooked on fishing after catching one of these beauties which
only leads to the desire to catch more.
